Inexpensive smart ways to reduce your electric bill without installing Solar Photo Voltaic panels with “no sacrifice” in your living standard.
Electricity is a “high end” form of energy expensive to generate and transport into any home or business and should be used wisely.
Presently electricity in the North East is more expensive than any other form of energy available to us in the USA.
Electricity powers more device than all other forms of energy combined, and despite its high cost continues to be the number one form of energy the world will not go without.
Use Natural Gas for your appliances especially your clothes dryer.
- Drying your clothes with electricity cost more than twice as much as drying your clothes with natural gas and will save a family of three or more a substantial amount of money every year. The savings year after year will more than pay for the added expense of buying a gas dryer many times over.
Use compact florescent light bulbs and florescent lighting in your home or business with electronic ballast and reflectors. Lighting can account for as much as 25% of a homes electrical consumption.
Unplug small home chargers for battery operated devices when not in use.
Properly sizing your Air Conditioners for their load size means less work for them.
Use only Energy Star rated appliances, TV's, Air conditioners etc.
Keep your appliances in good working order by routinely changing filters and cleaning coils
Do not use electricity for heating your domestic hot water or space heating if possible. If you are using electricity for space heating be certain the area you are heating is super insulated and the electrical device is properly sized to the space it is heating in the worst of weather conditions.
Turn off computers and other electrical devices when not in use.
Install timers on inside ventilation fans and outside lights.
Properly maintain all appliances including AC units, electric dryers, refrigerators and dehumidifiers.
- AC units, dryers and dehumidifiers all have filters that need to be cleaned or maintained on a regular basis.
Refrigerators have coils underneath that accumulate large amounts of thick air clogging dust and need to be cleaned annually. Coils located underneath a refrigerator can not be seen and get unintentionally neglected.
Make sure to allow adequate space between the wall and fridge if the coils are located on the back of the fridge.
Use ceiling fans in every room as opposed to AC.
Use dehumidifiers properly sized to the load at the 45% humidity setting first before turning on your AC.
Drying out a basement and living area in a home or business to a low humidity setting first on a portable humidifier will reduce your AC load.
Limit the number of times hot summer outside humid air is let into your building.
Properly vent your roof or attic with the solar powered attic fan.
Use a light colored shingle when replacing your roof.
Use high SSER AC split units and energy star window units.
Avoid putting split or window AC units in the sun.
Plant deciduous trees on the south east, south or south west side of your building to reduce your AC cost.
If you are a large commercial or industrial facility and have access to natural gas consider co or trigeneration to produce your own electricity, steam or hot water for winter space heating and hot water consumption. Steam can also be used in the non winter months (trigeneration) for air-conditioning. The limiting factor in co or tigenation is a sufficient waste heat thermal load from generating electricity and distance to the thermal load also called buildings. Electricity can travel vast distances with less power loss than miles of pipelines with super heated steam. Co or trigeneration should only be considered after your facility has exhausted all forms of energy conservation to include thermal and electrical improvements to your building.
